The new version of luxurious Orpheus headphones took a team of Sennheiser experts almost a decade of continuous work. The successor to the Orpheus is available for €50,000. The Orpheus system is hand-crafted in Germany of the more than 6,000 components. An outstanding acoustic performance is attained with usage of exclusive components such as gold-vaporized ceramic electrodes and platinum-vaporized diaphragms. The marble used for the amplifier housing comes from Carrara, Italy, home to the same marble that Michelangelo used.
The new device features a unique sound experience. However the design of the new Orpheus headphones is fascinating: when pressing the on-off button the vacuum tubes rise out from the marble base and start to shine, and a protective glass cover opens up to grant access to the headphones.
The first pair of the legendary $16,000 Orpheus HE90 was produced in 1991. It came with its own tube amplifier and looked very sophisticated. Only 300 pair of the original Orpheus exist today. Since 1991 their price increased threefold.
