The European Southern Observatory — an international research organization that champions ground-based astronomy — plans to turn one of its giant telescopes into an even more superior planet hunter. Specifically, the organization’s Very Large Telescope, or VLT, in northern Chile is getting a hardware upgrade, so that it can better search for planets around the stars of Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to Earth. Located just over 4 billion light-years away, the triple-star Alpha Centauri system could be home to unseen, habitable planets — the closest possible places for life to exist outside our Solar System. If such worlds exist, ESO believes that VLT will be able to directly image them, by enhancing one of the telescope’s main instruments.

Apple's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus hit shelves on Friday, September 16 (they're on preorder now), and you have a decision to make: stick with your phone for now or buy one of the new ones. Remember that the iPhone 7 Plus has the larger screen, second camera and slightly longer battery life. (For more details, here are all the differences between the two.) The new iPhones also ship with iOS 10, and many phones will upgrade to the new software starting September 13 -- here's the full list.

Microsoft is reminding everyone today that the free promotion for Windows 10 upgrades is finishing soon. The software maker first released Windows 10 as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines on July 29th last year, giving everyone a year to upgrade at no cost. Many had assumed Microsoft would keep the free upgrade rolling past the year cut off, but it appears the company is sticking to its original promise.

When I bought my Macbook Pro a year ago, I was feeling so internally guilty about spending $1500 on a laptop that I only paid for 128GB of storage, a decision I’ve regretted about three times per day ever since. This solution isn’t cheap, but at least it will stop me whining.
